Practical guide / Marketing measurement for a small team

Measure what came in, then the clicks.

A campaign report is useful only if it helps the business decide what to keep, change, or stop. Start with the customer action you want and the evidence your current systems can actually collect.

When to use this

Start with the decision in front of you.

Use this when campaign dashboards show activity but the team cannot tell which inquiries were useful or whether follow-up happened.

Decision steps

A practical sequence.

  1. 01

    Name the decision

Choose a question such as whether an offer should continue, whether a landing page needs clearer copy, or whether one channel creates inquiries staff can serve.

  2. 02

    Define a small event chain

Track the agreed path from visit or campaign response to inquiry, staff review, and a later business outcome when it can be recorded responsibly. Keep each event's definition stable.

  3. 03

    Record gaps and consent limits

Some visits cannot be attributed to a single campaign. Check privacy requirements and channel rules before adding tracking or sharing customer information. Do not turn missing data into a claimed result.

  4. 04

    Review examples with the team

Look at a few real inquiries alongside the totals. Ask whether the message attracted the intended need and whether the follow-up process gave the campaign a fair test.

Illustrative scenario, not a client case study

See the decision in context.

A business runs two messages for the same service and sees different form-submission totals.

Decision to test. The team could compare which forms contain the information needed to respond and whether both messages describe the same eligibility rules before shifting spend.

First action. Write down one decision the next report must support and the data needed to make it.

Take to your team

Questions worth answering.

  1. 01Which action counts as a useful inquiry?
  2. 02Can staff distinguish a request from a confirmed sale or booking?
  3. 03What data is missing, and could that change the conclusion?
